Ms.Thyroid, as seen by my close friend, fiber artist Marisa Allen. Don’t we look sweet together? Marisa carefully pin-tucked her so she’d be extra lumpy.

Thyroid Surgery Round 2

I had surgery on 2/26/10 to have the rest of my thyroid removed. I felt it was pressing on my wind pipe again and making me cough and wheeze. Surgery took about 4 hours because my thyroid was so entangled in my neck. The doctor also found a grape sized cyst unrelated to my thyroid that was pressing on my esophagus. Upon awakening in the hospital I could already breath better. I haven’t seen the scar yet, but I know there are stitches instead of staples this time.

so that’s what a thyroid REALLY looks like… i knew my anatomy textbook was taking liberties with its drawing…. lol.

Actually, Ms. Thyroid is just the left lobe…the total thyroidectomy was not a certainty until the surgery was underway.
The button eyes and string mouth, though, are totally anatomically accurate.

very, very sorry. i admire you for your posts about your medical trials. i’ve thought about posting my scars, but i haven’t been able to bring myself to do it yet.

    well, thank you very much.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it: either you’ll feel like doing it, or you won’t. I don’t think it’s a necessary step to getting past scars, either.

Thanks, I am recovering nicely so far. I hope your dad is doing well. The first two weeks after surgery are the hardest part.

Hi, I’m an admin for a group called Scars, and we’d love to have this added to the group!

It is all about the healing. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Omg I’m looking at your pictures and it makes feel weak. Even thought your healing process looks good. I am going for the same surgery June 15, 2010. Please tell me how bad was it because IM really scared and the scar will drive me crazy? Did you use any special ointment on it.

It’s not as bad as it looks. I don’t really worry about the scar at all. It’s under my collar line so it’s not noticeable. I put all kinds of ointments on the original scar, like vitamin E and special lotions, but the second surgery I haven’t put anything on it. I’m really not concerned about it. It’s barely noticeable.

As far as healing goes, I am completely back to normal. Every once in a while I swallow and feel some discomfort but it’s rare. It’s far better to have the thyroid out and not have to worry about it causing problems down the road. I am happy it is gone. I am happy with the results..
