Maize leaf showing symptoms of a mosaic virus; the same symptoms are caused by maize dwarf mosaic virus (MDMV) and sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV). Infected plants develop a distinct mosaic— irregularities in the distribution of normal green color—on the youngest leaf bases. The mosaic appearance may be enhanced by narrow chlorotic streaks extending parallel to the veins.

Wheat showing symptoms of root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp.). Infestations of root knot nematodes are characterized by the formation of small knots or galls near the tips of the roots. Above ground, infested plants are stunted and chlorotic. Excessive branching of affected roots sometimes occurs.
